Not Fade Away: a seven-minute film on Youtube about ghost sign doyen Frank Jump

I've just found this by chance - a short documentary about Frank Jump, a New York native who is one of the original ghost sign aficionados.

Frank, though, doesn't use the term 'ghost signs' - he prefers 'fading ads' because 'ghost' implies someone's death. He sees the signs as a symbol of survival against the odds, a parallel to his own life trajectory. Frank was diagnosed with  HIV in the 1980s and has beaten the odds - he's still around today:
