Until recently this Darrell Lea chocolate sign adorned the bridge over the railway track in Nicholson Street, Footscray. But now, with the expansion of the railway line to the Western suburbs (which incidentally was also responsible for the demolition of the building containing the Lewis & Skinner records), that sign, as well as the old shops above it, have gone forever.
The timing is poignant too, because Darrell Lea, which has sold chocolates since 1927, went into administration late last year and saw all its retail outlets eliminated (though the products still survive, albeit under a new owner). It used to have 1200 employees at its peak and now has 83.
