In February 2012 I stumbled upon a trove of company documents from the 1940s and 1950s at a demolition site in Footscray, Melbourne. Here I tell the stories associated with those documents: the records of signwriting company Lewis & Skinner, and the tattered books of correspondence connected with writer Morris West and the radio serial company he started and ran, Australasian Radio Productions. Plus the more general exploration of 'ghost signs' that my discovery has sparked.
Just to give you a date on one of your signs above...I signpainted the Palcolour sign when I was an apprentice at Omega signs in Box Hill about 30 years ago. It seems to be the last sign painted in a long line of previous works.
ReplyDeleteI'm still a signwriter working out of Spotswood.
I don't hand paint as much as I used to, but still enjoy it when I can get to sling some paint.
That's fabulous Tony - wonderful to attach a real story and person to the artefact. Would love to follow up on this. A couple of initial questions: Were you ever involved with the Letterheads group in the 1990s? And were you aware of the Lewis & Skinner company at all? Feel free to email me privately if you prefer: stefan.schutt (at) vu.edu.au
