Here I tell the stories associated with those documents: the records of signwriting company Lewis & Skinner, and the tattered books of correspondence connected with writer Morris West and the radio serial company he started and ran, Australasian Radio Productions. Plus the more general exploration of 'ghost signs' that my discovery has sparked.Stefhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14851692766581479588noreply@blogger.comBlogger307125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7393973654270517208.post-12398548365261887552017-04-09T03:25:00.000-07:002017-04-09T03:25:27.563-07:00Some Bendigo ghost signs<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've just come back from an overnight stay in the old gold mining city of Bendigo, where I stumbled on a few signs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Firstly, three on an old building opposite the railway station:</div>

There's also this sign in Bendigo, which we didn't encounter this weekend - this image is taken from here: <a href="http://www.cv.vic.gov.au/stories/a-diverse-state/goldfields-stories-made-in-bendigo-cold-beer/cohn-bros-cordial-sign/" target="_blank">http://www.cv.vic.gov.au/stories/a-diverse-state/goldfields-stories-made-in-bendigo-cold-beer/cohn-bros-cordial-sign/:</a><br />

<br />
<br />
However a tour guide today told us about the Cohn family - one of Bendigo's old gold rush-era Jewish families (from Denmark)who made a name for themselves as the town's first brewers then expanded into other drinks. See: <a href="http://www.cv.vic.gov.au/stories/a-diverse-state/goldfields-stories-made-in-bendigo-cold-beer/the-cohn-brothers-story/" target="_blank">http://www.cv.vic.gov.au/stories/a-diverse-state/goldfields-stories-made-in-bendigo-cold-beer/the-cohn-brothers-story/</a><br />

I've been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks - the first decent uncovering in quite a while. (I've had issues with my phone not being recognised by my new computer...)<br />
<br />
The Happy Thoughts Tobacco sign has recently been revealed in High Street Thornbury - an area of northern Melbourne that has taken the mantle of the latest hipster epicentre. And so it's not entirely unrelated that this part of our city is now "apartment development central", hence the tearing down of the building that has hidden this sign for nearly a century.<br />
<br />
You can see the sign was painted by the Hancock and Taylor firm: <br />

<br />
But Happy Thoughts was not their only product. <a href="http://aussietobaccotins.zoomshare.com/1.shtml/Dudgeon%20%26%20Arnell%20Pty%20Ltd,%20Melbourne" target="_blank">This site devoted to tobacco tins</a> has photos of a large number of tobacco brands made by the Dudgeon & Arnell company, including others with names also straight out of a motivational thinking seminar: Perfection; Triumphant; Grenadier; Harbour Bar; Phoenix; Sweet Memories; Darnel; White Heather; Censer; Sport; Silky Oak; Patrol; Sunday Best.<br />
<br />
It turns out that the company goes back a long way to Melbourne's colonial origins - <a href="https://dudgeonarnell.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">see this blog</a>. Co-founder John Dudgeon apparently arrived here in 1850 and died in 1884 (ironically of lung cancer) after having partnered with Charles Carty Arnell for some 20 years. He'd done OK with his tobacco empire, having apparently left 80,000 pounds to his wife and children.<br />
<br />
The author of the useful blog is someone whose great great grandfather worked for the company. The blog has a number of entries from 2013, but nothing since. It states of the company's origins::<br />
<br />
"Dudgeon & Arnell evolved from a tobacco manufactory started by
Gideon Heard in the late 1850s. There are some hints that he may have
been involved in the tobacco business even earlier in Sydney or Adelaide
(although the Sydney reference is likely to be a confusion with the
large American company “Messrs Heard & Co” of Augustine Heard
which operated out of China and had a large Asia-Pacific presence at
the time). Gideon Heard’s company became “Heard, Owen & Dudgeon” in
1862 and then “Owen, Dudgeon & Arnell” in 1864 before settling on
“Dudgeon & Arnell” in 1876." <br />
<br />
The blog also mentions that the Dudgeon & Arnell factory was located from the 1930s in River Street, Richmond, neat the corner of Palmer Street. It then says that "Dudgeon & Arnell operated from this location until 1953 when they
were taken over by Dobie, George & Son before that in turn was
absorbed into the Phillip Morris conglomerate."<br />
<br />

It's been a while! I've just returned from a quick and intense family trip to France and Germany and managed to snap a few signs in passing. I actually saw a lot more than shown here: some were impossible to photograph from high-speed trains (including some great wall-sized signs in Paris' outer suburbs) and others were encountered when my phone had run out of power. C'est la vie. So here are the few I did manage to snap.<br />
<br />
Montmartre, Paris: <br />
<br />

This:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5KrVKdBYpSA/V8bVrC3ozCI/AAAAAAAAIwo/aFQLUSsrjGMkG1z6q6Brq4iYcwLdpRB7ACLcB/s1600/14102394_10156201443401515_3416786359408492625_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5KrVKdBYpSA/V8bVrC3ozCI/AAAAAAAAIwo/aFQLUSsrjGMkG1z6q6Brq4iYcwLdpRB7ACLcB/s320/14102394_10156201443401515_3416786359408492625_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Finally, after three years from idea to completion - the world's first scholarly book on ghost signs is in my grubby little hands. Inside its pages are 22 chapters about ghost signs from Australia, the UK, US, Belgium, Peru and Vietnam, by a great group of academics, sign painters, historians, conservators, marketers and psychologists around the globe. It's been an enormous amount of work and to be honest I'm very glad it's all over - but also very glad it's here too.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The official site is here: <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Advertising-and-Public-Memory-Social-Cultural-and-Historical-Perspectives/Schutt-Roberts-White/p/book/9781138934689" target="_blank">https://www.routledge.com/Advertising-and-Public-Memory-Social-Cultural-and-Historical-Perspectives/Schutt-Roberts-White/p/book/9781138934689</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It describes the book as "the first scholarly collection to examine the social and cultural aspects on the worldwide interest in the faded remains of advertising signage (popularly known as ‘ghost signs’). Contributors to this volume examine the complex relationships between the signs and those who commissioned them, painted them, viewed them and view them today. Topics covered include cultural memory, urban change, modernity and belonging, local history and place-making, the crowd-sourced use of online mobile and social media to document and share digital artefacts, ‘retro’ design and the resurgence in interest in the handmade."</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As a hardback academic book with a limited market it's also very expensive - but it will come out in paperback in 12 months or so. Also, Google Books has some snippets if you'd like to peek inside :)</div>

It's been a while since I've posted here - life's kinda got in the way of late :) So now I've got this ridiculous backlog of ghost sign pics...will try to clear it over the next little while. Stay tuned.<br />
<br />
But first, some signs I snapped the other day in the main drag of Hurstbridge, including a fabbo Nestles sign uncovered by a billboard removal on an old grocery.<br />
<br />
Oh, and PS: After over two years of work, WE'VE HANDED IN THE FINAL PROOFS FOR OUR GHOST SIGNS ACADEMIC BOOK!! It should be out soon...the blurb is here: <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Advertising-and-Public-Memory-Social-Cultural-and-Historical-Perspectives/Schutt-Roberts-White/p/book/9781138934689" target="_blank">https://www.routledge.com/Advertising-and-Public-Memory-Social-Cultural-and-Historical-Perspectives/Schutt-Roberts-White/p/book/9781138934689</a><br />
<br />
Note that it will be only available in ridiculously expensive hardback for the first 12 months, then out in more reasonable paperback after that.<br />

Melbourne is well known for its coffee culture and its ghost signs, so it's not that much of a surprise that the two have met in recent years.<br />
<br />
At least two cafés are operating in premises that have uncovered ghost signs on their walls - and have left the signs there to their advantage.<br />
<br />
In fact, one, Mr Morse - just next to the railway bridge in Johnston Street, Abbotsford, has named itself after the large early 20th century <i>Mr Morse's Indian Root Pills</i> sign uncovered on a former external wall:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xyFNAcSOxV4/VxxJfHzC5bI/AAAAAAAAIpg/vF4h2SXcbPQqrewx79oEcaxdEs-1UtPKgCLcB/s1600/IMG_6973.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xyFNAcSOxV4/VxxJfHzC5bI/AAAAAAAAIpg/vF4h2SXcbPQqrewx79oEcaxdEs-1UtPKgCLcB/s320/IMG_6973.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TqWQ-Y3MW10/VxxJZHJ-NPI/AAAAAAAAIpc/RhPLuQ-vevccxktVGdwpsuNLvEjvFFf3gCLcB/s1600/IMG_6969.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TqWQ-Y3MW10/VxxJZHJ-NPI/AAAAAAAAIpc/RhPLuQ-vevccxktVGdwpsuNLvEjvFFf3gCLcB/s320/IMG_6969.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mkMjVWE7Jw/VxxJprSnD_I/AAAAAAAAIpk/neNI8jazxw8VohbehHO2QEz2lIP5Hwn0QCLcB/s1600/IMG_6971.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mkMjVWE7Jw/VxxJprSnD_I/AAAAAAAAIpk/neNI8jazxw8VohbehHO2QEz2lIP5Hwn0QCLcB/s320/IMG_6971.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This sign is part of an intense marketing push by the Australian purveyors of a snake oil remedy originally from the US - as seen by many other large cobalt blue Indian Root Pills signs around the district, including the famous chicory kiln in Bacchus Marsh (below) and various other Root Pills sign uncoverings (see: <a href="http://findingtheradiobook.blogspot.com.au/search?q=root+pills" target="_blank">http://findingtheradiobook.blogspot.com.au/search?q=root+pills</a>). And for more details on Dr Morse's elixir, see the great Melbourne Circle blog for a fascinating history of the Indian Root Pills brand: <a href="https://melbournecircle.net/2015/05/09/layers-of-ghosts-on-abbotsford-street/" target="_blank">https://melbournecircle.net/2015/05/09/layers-of-ghosts-on-abbotsford-street/</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4njHXjzFj1w/VxxLO7aL57I/AAAAAAAAIp0/J_wZLDUp1xEQz1Jt-m5GiZFmrY8b0p6dACLcB/s1600/IMG_6872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4njHXjzFj1w/VxxLO7aL57I/AAAAAAAAIp0/J_wZLDUp1xEQz1Jt-m5GiZFmrY8b0p6dACLcB/s320/IMG_6872.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The second café is in Lower Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe. Signwriter Larry Stammers alerted me to this great place after we met at a State Library talk recently. Funnily enough, when I went to take these pics recently, Larry was there having lunch. Again, the sign was painted on a former external wall. We wondered what oat company it might have been - possibly Uncle Toby's - there's a large faded ghost sign in St Georges Road in North Fitzroy that though very different in other ways has a similar curved swirl (any suggestions?)<br />
<br />

<br />
This wall has an extra level of political interest too. Public external walls were used in much the same way that billboarders use construction sites and derelict buildings today - places to publicise events with posters. (See here for another example of posters being uncovered through building works: <a href="http://findingtheradiobook.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/spectacular-lewis-skinner-uncovering-in.html" target="_blank">http://findingtheradiobook.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/spectacular-lewis-skinner-uncovering-in.html</a>). This wall has a spectacular trace - a 1934 election poster for a candidate for the United Australia Party, the predecessor to today's Liberal Party. It's been nicely preserved on the wall:<br />

"COOPED up in her magnificent 19th century “office”, artist
and researcher Amy Tsilemanis loves nothing more than researching
Ballarat’s antique advertising signs and brochures.<br />
Based in
the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute library, Tsilemanis’ goal is to bring
“old things to life in creative ways”. She is currently working on a
project about the city’s “ghost advertising” on the sides of buildings
– faded ads from the past."<br />

This old real estate sign was recently uncovered in the heart of St Kilda's former centre of sin: Grey Street. Of course, it's rapidly gentrifying - as evidenced by the flash new apartments being built on this former down-at-heel site:<br />

Today I was driving on Highett Road near the Highett Railway Station. I saw a glimpse of a painted paintbrush on a fascia, decided to give it a miss, then saw a European cake shop. Hmmm. Lunchtime. Worth a look then.<br />
<br />
So I parked, got some food and walked down the street. Lucky I did - walking back the other way I stumbled on a palimpsest of signs that includes a Velvet Soap sign with a cartoon figure painted over the top:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k4I-N4-0MZQ/VsbyHSMpLKI/AAAAAAAAIgg/w6KbhBMyC50/s1600/IMG_6778.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k4I-N4-0MZQ/VsbyHSMpLKI/AAAAAAAAIgg/w6KbhBMyC50/s320/IMG_6778.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-skDd6-KYz7Q/VsbyAejcxrI/AAAAAAAAIgY/axq1k6aIGg0/s1600/IMG_6779.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-skDd6-KYz7Q/VsbyAejcxrI/AAAAAAAAIgY/axq1k6aIGg0/s320/IMG_6779.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I saw the sign from a small square across the road. There was something on the wall there too. I took a closer look - and realised it was the R and O from a large Robur Tea sign:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
The paint shop fascia was there too, but hard to photograph from the other side of the busy road:<br />

The other day I was on Smith Street Collingwood. On a corner is a motor garage that's been there forever - these days it looks like it's run by people who are also motoring history enthusiasts. The place was open and the walls were covered in old enamel signs for petrol and oil. People were sitting around the workshop, so I felt odd about taking photos.<br />
<br />
A few days earlier, though, I'd been there when the place was closed. The whitewashed walls have been partly stripped back, presumably by the enthusiast owners, to reveal a bunch of old painted signs, including a big one for Elephant Kerosene, a former brand of both the Esso and Standard-Vacuum oil companies:<br />

Happy new year! It's been nearly two months since I posted on this blog - there's been lots on.<br />
<br />
Firstly, our forthcoming edited academic book on ghost signs has consumed much of my time of late. It's finally about to go into production - will let you know when it's out. It will have 22 chapters about ghost signs from around the world, by a range of academics and practitioners. I'm very proud of it. Some initial details are here: <a href="http://www.taylorandfrancis.com/books/details/9781138934689/" target="_blank">http://www.taylorandfrancis.com/books/details/9781138934689/</a><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Secondly, I'll soon be doing a <span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">talk at the State Library of Victoria on the Lewis and Skinner archive. Details are here: <a href="https://webmail.vu.edu.au/owa/redir.aspx?SURL=iMoZ9PMawl5gJAaURoMIXx0i-NX9HWZT8WmdxLHvJpdj3cyESijTCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AdwB3AHcALgBzAGwAdgAuAHYAaQBjAC4AZwBvAHYALgBhAHUALwB3AGgAYQB0AHMALQBvAG4ALwBjAHIAZQBhAHQAaQB2AGUALQBjAG8AbgB2AGUAcgBzAGEAdABpAG8AbgBzAC0AbABlAHcAaQBzAC0AcwBrAGkAbgBuAGUAcgAtAHMAaQBnAG4AdwByAGkAdABpAG4AZwAtAGEAcgBjAGgAaQB2AGUA&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.slv.vic.gov.au%2fwhats-on%2fcreative-conversations-lewis-skinner-signwriting-archive" target="_blank">http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/whats-on/creative-conversations-lewis-skinner-signwriting-archive</a>. Unfortunately it's now booked out - but drop me a line if you'd like to go and I'll see if I can get you in.</span></div>
<br />
Thirdly, this blog has now generated 40,000 unique page views, which is very nice. Thanks for reading!<br />
<br />
And lastly - I've accumulated a large backlog of ghost sign pics over the last months and will start posting these shortly. Stay tuned...</div>

Today I took a lightning five-hour visit to central Sydney for work. But even in that short time, a few ghost signs reared their heads.<br />
<br />
I snapped the first one in the city near Wynyard station on the way to our meeting.<br />

The other three were taken by colleague Dale from the train back to the airport (Dale had the better phone camera):<br />

It's been a little while since I've been able to post some sign pics - and there are plenty to post. So might as well get started. Here are a few I took yesterday that popped up unexpectedly when I was walking through the Melbourne CBD's south-west, around Highlander Lane:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5N_ZYfiVmhs/VmAHDvy46cI/AAAAAAAAIa8/kHIShGZwO2U/s1600/IMG_6399.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5N_ZYfiVmhs/VmAHDvy46cI/AAAAAAAAIa8/kHIShGZwO2U/s320/IMG_6399.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2uQzM0PIb3U/VmAHufSR5tI/AAAAAAAAIbU/HDVfdTi4rFU/s1600/IMG_6402.JPG"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2uQzM0PIb3U/VmAHufSR5tI/AAAAAAAAIbU/HDVfdTi4rFU/s320/IMG_6402.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Further down, there was this, on Rutherglen House - one of the city's original residences (1842), and host of a colourful recent life: <a href="http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/city-address-often-visited-by-powerbrokers-and-celebrities-20130304-2fgzk.html" target="_blank">http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/city-address-often-visited-by-powerbrokers-and-celebrities-20130304-2fgzk.html</a><br />
<br />
The sign says (something) House - but obviously not when it was called 'Rutherglen': <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-za4WwIFf1Zg/VmAHyiEsOrI/AAAAAAAAIbs/R1uI3DqIpgM/s1600/IMG_6407.JPG"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-za4WwIFf1Zg/VmAHyiEsOrI/AAAAAAAAIbs/R1uI3DqIpgM/s320/IMG_6407.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9CoOh0smuUA/VmAHvq1M3mI/AAAAAAAAIbg/t5ep-nrqWQ8/s1600/IMG_6405.JPG" imageanchor="1"> </a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9CoOh0smuUA/VmAHvq1M3mI/AAAAAAAAIbg/t5ep-nrqWQ8/s1600/IMG_6405.JPG"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9CoOh0smuUA/VmAHvq1M3mI/AAAAAAAAIbg/t5ep-nrqWQ8/s320/IMG_6405.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wDpZDewdq1A/VmAH3H7Vn2I/AAAAAAAAIcQ/8k3fP8z7GPw/s1600/IMG_6410.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iD_12VQCF6M/VmAH0fs8rpI/AAAAAAAAIb4/P8SKNZneb_g/s1600/IMG_6411.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then around the corner, the entrance to the old sewerage works:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wDpZDewdq1A/VmAH3H7Vn2I/AAAAAAAAIcQ/8k3fP8z7GPw/s1600/IMG_6410.jpg"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wDpZDewdq1A/VmAH3H7Vn2I/AAAAAAAAIcQ/8k3fP8z7GPw/s320/IMG_6410.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Up above: not a ghost sign but a fascinating late Victorian urban sanitation innovation - 5-storey urinals at the back of the Rialto Centre. Ironically, one of the state-of the-then-art building's first tenants was the Metropolitan Board of Works, who ran the city's sewerage system. More here: <a href="http://www.onmydoorstep.com.au/heritage-listing/743/rialto-building" target="_blank">http://www.onmydoorstep.com.au/heritage-listing/743/rialto-building</a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iD_12VQCF6M/VmAH0fs8rpI/AAAAAAAAIb4/P8SKNZneb_g/s1600/IMG_6411.jpg"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iD_12VQCF6M/VmAH0fs8rpI/AAAAAAAAIb4/P8SKNZneb_g/s320/IMG_6411.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And lastly, to finish off, a sign I'd previously missed on Elizabeth Street:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5mqQTg-TQcI/VmAHtdJerPI/AAAAAAAAIbI/qXu1r66f4kE/s1600/IMG_6412.jpg"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5mqQTg-TQcI/VmAHtdJerPI/AAAAAAAAIbI/qXu1r66f4kE/s320/IMG_6412.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

Today we went to the Sunday market in Kongwak, South Gippsland, a tiny farming town in the green hills south of Korumburra. We saw a couple of signs there (see below), but as we went up the main road, I was blown away by this brilliant renovated Mobil service station:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6IZSPy9hyjw/VhD7cjcvGSI/AAAAAAAAIYE/Z0tpV3-bRYA/s1600/IMG_6069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6IZSPy9hyjw/VhD7cjcvGSI/AAAAAAAAIYE/Z0tpV3-bRYA/s320/IMG_6069.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c9Zi5D4ABVU/VhD7gL-YE8I/AAAAAAAAIYM/J_mqDycj3OQ/s1600/IMG_6071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c9Zi5D4ABVU/VhD7gL-YE8I/AAAAAAAAIYM/J_mqDycj3OQ/s320/IMG_6071.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This was exciting. It's the first time I've encountered a 1950s Mobil servo in such pristine condition, especially since the Lewis & Skinner signwriting documents I found (see: <a href="http://www.lewisandskinner.com/" target="_blank">www.lewisandskinner.com</a>) record the painting of many of similar servos, eg:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ca8O-oOTeUo/VhD9u3RtZKI/AAAAAAAAIYg/YfDxKeH6G74/s1600/18163c7e615823b35943801528e59f40.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="253" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ca8O-oOTeUo/VhD9u3RtZKI/AAAAAAAAIYg/YfDxKeH6G74/s320/18163c7e615823b35943801528e59f40.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LPR6Hi7ZHD8/VhD91Y8RheI/AAAAAAAAIYo/ju5dDxxZLVY/s1600/4f1072c52e6bedba7f4cb640eb8a8fcd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LPR6Hi7ZHD8/VhD91Y8RheI/AAAAAAAAIYo/ju5dDxxZLVY/s320/4f1072c52e6bedba7f4cb640eb8a8fcd.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There's very little on this property that I've been able to find online - except for a mention in Trove from 1956. Interesting though that there still seem to be a lot of Chapmans in Kongwak.<br />
<br />
Here are the other signs I snapped from the area:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BPuwNGsaf0s/VhD-9Kk4KWI/AAAAAAAAIZM/DhrFRA6nUHQ/s1600/IMG_6064.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BPuwNGsaf0s/VhD-9Kk4KWI/AAAAAAAAIZM/DhrFRA6nUHQ/s320/IMG_6064.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M50oc3fCi-k/VhD-x147FnI/AAAAAAAAIY8/81UwS-oWvag/s1600/IMG_6065.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M50oc3fCi-k/VhD-x147FnI/AAAAAAAAIY8/81UwS-oWvag/s320/IMG_6065.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This looks like it might have been the former sugar mill. The next ones are from the former general store that now hosts the market:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KxzPj5zqTqg/VhD-5FWiqsI/AAAAAAAAIZE/KcfBx7HMUOA/s1600/IMG_6066.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KxzPj5zqTqg/VhD-5FWiqsI/AAAAAAAAIZE/KcfBx7HMUOA/s320/IMG_6066.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wOBDUgpIQPA/VhD_MmlccUI/AAAAAAAAIZU/T84eQw7xDwc/s1600/IMG_6067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wOBDUgpIQPA/VhD_MmlccUI/AAAAAAAAIZU/T84eQw7xDwc/s320/IMG_6067.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-22TIg35LkV4/VhD_PbGsd8I/AAAAAAAAIZc/nJKd5jymKMs/s1600/IMG_6068.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-22TIg35LkV4/VhD_PbGsd8I/AAAAAAAAIZc/nJKd5jymKMs/s320/IMG_6068.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
...and here's one great old shop I snapped in Korumburra, on the way back to Melbourne:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gRc7UTAPyvQ/VhD_kAK4SgI/AAAAAAAAIZ0/o862Uf-jjEM/s1600/IMG_6072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gRc7UTAPyvQ/VhD_kAK4SgI/AAAAAAAAIZ0/o862Uf-jjEM/s320/IMG_6072.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

This week's been a good week for Robur.<br />
<br />
Firstly, I did a fun talk on Saturday for the City of Port Phillip/ Melbourne University ghost sign project: <a href="http://heritage.portphillip.vic.gov.au/Whats_on/Events_Calendar/Painted_ghost_signs_Phase_2_-_Port_Melbourne" target="_blank">http://heritage.portphillip.vic.gov.au/Whats_on/Events_Calendar/Painted_ghost_signs_Phase_2_-_Port_Melbourne</a><br />
<br />
That talk focused on Robur Tea.<br />
<br />
And in the few days since then, I've spied two more Robur signs, tucked away on first-floor side walls in Brunswick and Yarraville:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMDlk5ZoIoU/VfkF-U84RmI/AAAAAAAAIXU/tkram1vG2x4/s1600/COrZ2ELUEAALoo_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMDlk5ZoIoU/VfkF-U84RmI/AAAAAAAAIXU/tkram1vG2x4/s320/COrZ2ELUEAALoo_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hW2XAXN9Od8/VfkF-rZGx2I/AAAAAAAAIXY/JEwp1v5QwO4/s1600/IMG_6043.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hW2XAXN9Od8/VfkF-rZGx2I/AAAAAAAAIXY/JEwp1v5QwO4/s320/IMG_6043.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Following on from the last post, here's another uncovering from today. This Nestle sign is just near the Brighton Beach train station. Thanks to the good folks at the Brighton Historical Society for alerting me to it:<br />

Big thanks to Rob Gray for alerting me to this uncovering on Glenhuntly Road in Caulfield. It's for Bensdorp's Cocoa, a brand that is still going. It looks like it's from the 1920s or 1930s, judging by the cobalt blue and type face - but it's hard to tell. There are a few containers around with a similar type, such as the one on this page, described as being "1900-1930": <a href="http://historydetectives.nyhistory.org/2014/02/the-history-of-chocolate-at-the-new-york-historical-society/" target="_blank">http://historydetectives.nyhistory.org/2014/02/the-history-of-chocolate-at-the-new-york-historical-society/</a><br />
<br />
Still, the most exciting thing for me is that it was painted by the Lewis & Skinner, whose company records I found three years ago (see: <a href="http://www.lewisandskinner.com/" target="_blank">www.lewisandskinner.com</a>).<br />
<br />
Here are some of the pics I took today, in the late winter light: <br />

Yesterday I was booked into an Indigenous walk along Merri Creek, which was cancelled at the last minute.<br />
<br />
So instead I reacquainted myself with the uber-gentrified streets of one-was-working-class North Fitzroy...and found a few beauties.<br />
<br />
On the way to the walk, I had seen a round mark on a wall - here's what it looked like close up. It looks like it's a sign for the Rosella brand of jams, whose factory can be found in Richmond:<br />

On Saturday my daughter took me up to the first floor of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Building" target="_blank">Nicholas Building</a> in central Melbourne, built in 1926 in the Chicago School style by the Nicholas brothers (who had made their money manufacturing and marketing aspirin) and designed by architect Harry Norris.<br />
<br />
Upstairs from its ornate <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_Arcade" target="_blank">Cathedral Arcade</a>, the fashionably rundown building has some interesting and curious shops on the first and second floors - a button shop, a fortune teller, homewares, a talent school, designers, a place that makes voodoo dolls, a bookshop - and offices for creative types upstairs.<br />
<br />
It also has some great details in its corners: polished wooden panelling, beautiful coloured tilework, a central lift surrounded by lace ironwork - and signs dotted throughout:<br />

The other day I went past the old milk bar on the way to my daughter's school in Coburg. It's on Reynard Street, a former sign haven that has already <a href="http://findingtheradiobook.blogspot.com.au/2014/03/an-old-friend-has-left-building.html" target="_blank">lost a lot of its ghost signs</a>, and <a href="http://findingtheradiobook.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/bye-robur-sign-hello-grocery-sign.html" target="_blank">found one too</a>.<br />
<br />
Here the news is mixed. We've lost the awesome Tarax sign in the windows (see below), but it looks like the grocer and Lipton sign might even survive the redevelopment into apartments:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">..and as it was.</td></tr>

<br />
Here's another around the corner in Melville Road, in the process of being redeveloped too.<u><br /></u><br />

Russell Street, 1954, during the Queen's visit. That was the year the Vacuum Oil Company was changing all the signs around Melbourne from Plume to Mobilgas - this one soon to come:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s3gLpXV3Rmw/VbYcUrQX78I/AAAAAAAAILY/_vr_eUYzx5s/s1600/download%25281%2529.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="209" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s3gLpXV3Rmw/VbYcUrQX78I/AAAAAAAAILY/_vr_eUYzx5s/s320/download%25281%2529.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
(see full record details here: <a href="http://search.slv.vic.gov.au/primo_library/libweb/action/dlDisplay.do?vid=MAIN&docId=SLV_VOYAGER1830285&fn=permalink" target="_blank">http://search.slv.vic.gov.au/primo_library/libweb/action/dlDisplay.do?vid=MAIN&docId=SLV_VOYAGER1830285&fn=permalink</a>)<br />
<br />
And another of Russell Street, 1932:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--O9zmerhfKw/VbYdyXI4wlI/AAAAAAAAILs/bXxvrgaFs4I/s1600/11011597_10153180070009332_996135005815539632_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--O9zmerhfKw/VbYdyXI4wlI/AAAAAAAAILs/bXxvrgaFs4I/s320/11011597_10153180070009332_996135005815539632_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's a great one from 1934 - notice the great work by the Sid Syne company:<br />
<br />
